Raising
the Voice!
Public Defender of Rights
Visual identity of the Public Defender of Rights as a tool for strengthening the voice of the public when witnessing violations of rights and freedoms. The Public Defender of Rights is an independent constitutional body of the Slovak Republic which protects the fundamental rights and freedoms of natural persons and legal persons in proceedings from public authorities and other public authorities to the extent and in the manner laid down by law, if their actions, decisions or inactions are inconsistent with legal order.
The mission of the Public Defender of rights is to give a voice to the public when faced with issues from different government authorities. The ambition of the former ÚPN in Slovakia, Maria Patakyova, during whose tenure the identity was created, was: "To strengthen the voice of citizens to resonate in the activities of public administration, and thus to help restore people's confidence in government in Slovakia." The new visual identity concept is built as a way to highlight this mission and to strengthen the voice of PODR’s warnings. The organization is very active in communicating important content to the public, which is why a custom typography based on a punctuation mark was created. It can be used to emphasize sentences, warnings, and cautions – the exclamation point. By getting rid of its normal function of ending a sentence and transforming it into a font, visual emphasis was added to all the content it presents. The basic element of identity is therefore a custom font family Interkvop, which is based on the open-source font Inter.
